What is the difference between Hells Gate & Wai Ora Spa facilities?
Hells Gate has semi private mud baths with a very open spa area overlooking the thermal park. Wai Ora has private mud baths with an open spa that is secluded and set apart from the rest of the complex.
Can I hire swimsuits, shorts or towels? Yes you may hire our swimsuits and towels. These are priced at NZ$2.50 per item. We also require a $20NZD bond to hire our swimsuits which will be refunded when the garments are returned.
How far is Hells Gate away from town?
Approximately 18km and 15-20 minutes drive east from town, and 5 minutes from the airport.
What age is a child?
A child is aged from 5 to 15 years of age.
A child 5 years and under is free of charge
What times are the Shuttle pick-ups and where do they pick up from?
There is a complimentary shuttle transfer offer available for those doing the following packages: Hells Gate Special Combo, Wai Ora Special Combo, Hells Gate mud bath and spa, Wai Ora mud bath & spa and the Ultimud package. This offer also applies to customers doing any of our treatments which are massage/facial/body scrub treatment
From 31st August to 30 April the transfer times are: 9.00am, 1.00pm and 5.00pm
From the 1st of May to 30th August the transfer times are: 9.00am, 1.00pm and 4.00pm
Pick up and drop off is at any local accommodation or anywhere in the Central Business District
Do we need to make a booking for massage or other treatments i.e. facial, massage and/or body scrub?
Yes you do need to make a booking so that we can allocate a massage room and a therapist
Do we need to book for the geothermal walk, mudbaths and/or spa or combos? No, it is not necessary
Is the sulphur spa and/or mudbath suitable for children under 2 years of age?
Yes, however the child must wear disposable swimming attire.
Also the child will also have to have a cold shower after the mud bath as per our mud bath and spa regime. Does sulphur cause asthma? No, it actually helps to relieve some of the symptoms suffered by some asthmatics
Do you add any other chemicals such as chlorine into the mudbaths or spas? No Where do you get the mud and geothermal water from?

What do we need to bring?
For the geothermal walk – good, comfortable walking shoes
For the mudbath and spa – swimsuits or shorts, towel (you can hire these items)
For the massage and facial treatments – you may prefer to wear clean, dry underwear, which is optional.
What days are you open?
We are open 7 days a week from 8.30am-8.30pm and only close on Christmas Day.
What is in the mud bath?
1/3 geothermal mud and 2/3 geothermal water, heated to approximately 38-42 degrees celcius Will the mud bath and/or sulphur spa discolour my swimsuit?
Yes it may discolour white or light-coloured swimsuits. (Please ensure you rinse your swimsuits immediately after bathing)
