Another reason for stopping here is that during January and February a very interesting event takes place. Now many people when thinking about the first fast food takeaway in New Zealand think of either McDonald’s, Burger King or K.F.C. However, the first was here at Tikitere.

During these two months the insects fly out from the forest and bush areas and are attracted to the hot water in the lakes. The insects die through cooking which combined with the prevailing winds that come up the valley,  present a cooked meal that is served up to the birds that are waiting on the shores of the lake directly below us.
