GEOTHERMAL SULPHUR CRYSTALS

This area shows the formations possible from sulphur-laden steam.

Sulphur crystals

The sulphur on condensating, form stalactites and eventually stalagmites that join together. This process takes about two years. The very fine nature of these sulphur formations can be seen opposite in one of the steaming fumaroles.

The surrounding area here is blackened, due to naturally occurring fires that happen three or four times a year.  What happens is that the sulphur on the ground becomes hot and eventually ignites spontaneously, burning at a temperature of 350oC and melting the surrounding land.

Normally the fires are left to burn,  but as this one was so close to the pathway, the fire brigade was called upon.  Many tonnes of water and four hours later, the flames were extinguished and the molten rock was solid once more. We believe that the next fire will occur in the middle of the park.
